"Eva Catafygiotu Topping, educator, author and lecturer, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Mary Washington College. She received a Master of Arts in Classics from Radcliffe College and did doctoral work at Harvard University. As a Fulbright Scholar, she also attended the University of Athens (Greece). Ms. Topping taught Ancient Greek and Latin at Wheaton College and Modern Greek at the University of Cincinnati.
She earned an international reputation for her pioneer work on Byzantine hymnography and on women in the Orthodox Church. Her books included Holy Mothers of Orthodoxy, Saints and Sisterhood, Sacred Songs, and Sacred Stories from Byzantium. She also collaborated with Josef Szoverffy on A Guide to Byzantine Hymnography II
Ms. Topping published numerous articles on women's history, Modern Greek poetry, American philhellenism, the Orthodox Church, Greek American history, and the Greek Revolution. Her writings reflected a deep interest in the rich tradition of Hellenism and Orthodoxy.
An activist, Ms. Topping served in many capacities: a founder of the Greek American Women's Network, a trustee of the Nativity of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church (Fredricksburg, Virginia), Board of Directors of Orthodox Christian Laity (1989-1992), a member of the Task Force of Women of Faith in the 80's and Executive Council of Church Women United.
Eva Topping received the Hellenic American Achievement Award from the Hellenic Spirit Foundation in St. Louis and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Hellenic Institute in Washington, D.C."
